Teacher Education Modules

One key endeavor of the project is to develop new and innovative teacher education modules emphasizing practice-oriented teaching, promoting democracy and human rights.

The 12 participating university faculties have developed several teacher education modules on a local level, supported by the project.

It is a must for all new teacher education modules to include at least 20% teaching practice allowing the teacher students to apply their pedagogical skills and knowledge in practice and all modules will include materials in the field of citizenship and human rights education, developed by the Council of Europe and partners, including experts from the Western Balkans.

15 modules are being developed targeting MA and BA students in 14 different subjects and study areas.

Democratic culture and peace pedagogy in teacher education: Practice examples from virtual classrooms

The publication “Democratic culture and peace pedagogy in teacher education: Practice examples from
virtual classrooms” is composed of sessions developed for the online course which was implemented
through the Peace Education Hub of the Faculty of Philosophy in Sarajevo, within the project ‘Preparing Future Teachers. Educating for Democracy and Human Rights’ (2019-2022).

Culture of Democracy Through the Visual Art Preschool Education

The module is aimed for students-future teachers to provide them with didactic strategies that implement contemporary cultural values and decision-making skills for implementation of democratic thinking and behaviour to real life by its integration in visual art education for pre-schoolers.

Democracy through Didactics of Teaching Mathematics

The module integrates teaching democracy in mathematical education that support the learning process and provide environment where students can not only gain knowledge of mathematical contents, but also methodical and decision-making competencies and skills for implementation of democratic thinking and behaviour.

Culture of Democracy through the Culture of speech and its Didactics for preschool educators

This module is intended to transfer the contents of the course Methodology of educational work in speech culture with which students will gain knowledge and skills that will be able to successfully hold activities in the field of language in preschool institutions and in parallel to introduce appropriate key competencies of democratic education.

Culture of Democracy Through the Didactics of Chemistry

This publication contains the semester plan of a training module for pre-service teachers as well as the detailed planning of all 12 semester units (session plans). This module is intended for primary and secondary school teachers through a combination of pedagogical-content knowledge and democracy. The module included specific chemistry content and attempted to integrate democratic principles and values into the education of future teachers.

On 12 December 2022, EWC conducted a webinar “Teachers for Democracy: Role of Higher Education” and brought together 54 higher education experts, teacher trainers and teacher students from 21 countries. They shared their experiences and discussed how democracy can be promoted through initial teacher education across Europe.
