Signposts teacher training module, Teaching about religions and non-religious world views in intercultural education

This manual is developed to be used in teacher education. The aim of the training module is to offer safe ways for teachers to address issues connected to religion and non-religious world views in the framework of intercultural education.

Since it was published six years ago “Signposts – Policy and practice for teaching about religions and non-religious world views in intercultural education” has been translated into 13 languages. The question asked in Signposts: “How can the study of religions and non-religious world views contribute to intercultural education in schools in Europe” obviously touches a nerve across continents, languages and yes, religions. And so do the advice offered, based on the Council of Europe Recommendation CM/Rec(2008)12 on the dimension of religions and non-religious convictions within intercultural education.

The wide interest for the topics covered made the European Wergeland Centre and the Council of Europe establish a joint project to develop a teacher training module based on Signposts. In 2020, the module was finalized and ready for distribution. It is developed to be used in teacher education. The aim of the training module is to offer safe ways for teachers to address issues connected to religion and non-religious world views in the framework of intercultural education.

Other CoE publications, linked to the training manual, are the Reference Framework of Competences for Democratic Culture (RFCDC) and Teaching Controversial Issues.
