A media literacy publication prepared by teacher students in Montenegro as part of the EWC Preparing Future Teachers in the Western Balkans project.
The authors of the Media Literacy publication are students of the Faculty of Philology (Study Program for Montenegrin Language and South Slavic Literatures & Serbian Language and South Slavic Literatures) of the University of Montenegro, who attended the Media Literacy module as part of the project Preparing Future Teachers in the Western Balkans – Education for Democracy and Human Rights,provided by the European Wergeland Center.
The contents of the publication refer to concepts crucial for understanding media literacy and its importance for creating a democratic environment, the position of this problem in the educational system of Montenegro and its importance as a whole, the choice of media, understanding and deconstruction of media messages and possibilities of media manipulation. A significant part of the publication consists of preparations for lessons authored by students – future teachers, given that the primary body of the module’s objectives was aimed at teaching practice in schools, i.e. preparation and implementation of classes dedicated to media literacy.
Educational outcomes, learning outcomes and content are aligned with current programs intended for teaching the mother tongue, which demonstrates the possibility of implementing this issue in existing curricula. Classes are organized using active and interactive teaching methods, with an emphasis on student activities and an effort to create a democratic learning environment, and with the help of the Living Democracy manual, intended for teachers.
